As far as Austrian destinations go, there's always been just one city at the top of my list: Salzburg.

Yes, I know Austria is full of great cities and stunning scenery. But I've been obsessed with the idea of visiting Salzburg since before I even discovered my love for traveling.

Why, you ask? Well because of “The Sound of Music,” of course. The Hollywood-ized version of the von Trapp family's story was one of my favorite movies growing up, and I've always wanted to visit the city where the story took place.

Mirabell Gardens Salzburg
These gardens star in quite a few “SOM” scenes!

But you know what? There's more to Salzburg than “Do Re Mi” and hills that are alive. In this post, I want to share with you the OTHER bits of Salzburg that charmed me. Like the Old Town with its old wrought iron signs and the street musicians who play Mozart and the great greenery-filled views that this city offers up.

Enjoy these sights of Salzburg:

  1. One of my favorite cities to go on an adventure and explore the Altstadt district on foot. Lot’s of great memories here, excellent overview of the city

Gorgeous photos. I visited Salzburg when I was a kid (1970) on a driving trip through Europe with my family. I’m ready to go back right now after seeing these photos.

I’m sure it’s changed a bit since the last time you were there!

I visited Salzburg in high school and would love to go back. The only thing I really remember is singing and dancing with my friend in the arbor 🙂

As always, these photos you post make me want to go so bad! That castle is amazing! Did you get to go inside of it? And what crazy instrument is that guy playing in the street?! Great photo essay Amanda 🙂

Yes, I did indeed visit the castle while I was there! But I’m sorry, I have no idea what kind of instrument that is! It was cool, though.

Is it even possible to take a bad picture in Salzburg?! I’m swooning.

    Happy travels 🙂

great photos! I love those little flag things along the river

I lived in Salzburg for 3 weeks during a summer when I was a law student; and those were three of the best weeks I’ve ever had. It’s such a beautiful city, and you have well captured that beauty! And I’m not ashamed to say that I did go on the “Sound of Music” tour when I was there. 🙂 Another of my fave activities there was the salt mine, where you go down a super-long slide at the end . . .

Great to hear that you have fond memories of Salzburg, too! I also did a Sound of Music tour, don’t worry! Didn’t make it out to the salt mines, but the slide at the end sounds like fun!

Lovely photos – though it’s hard to take a bad picture of Salzburg (no offence)! In the last three years before coming to South America I spent a LOT of time in Austria, and many weeks in the cities (there are really only 4 others: Vienna, Linz, Graz and Innsbruck), but only ever a couple of days total in Salzburg. Next year, when I’m back in Europe, I’m looking forward to getting to know this part of the country better, especially in summer – so beautiful!

Haha no offense at all taken, Sam! You are so right – it’s really hard to take bad photos here, especially if you have nice weather! I hope you do get to explore it a bit more for yourself soon.
